The client sells a strictly regulated product category, so every order must be legally correct before it ships. Over a five-year partnership (2018–2023), Encomage built a custom Magento 2 platform: a Canadian payment gateway, end-to-end fulfillment automation, and law-aligned buyer verification.

THE CLIENT
The client is a Canadian e-commerce retailer whose goods are tightly governed by Canadian law at the point of sale and shipment. That regulation shapes far more than the storefront — it dictates the legal correctness of every step of a purchase, from verifying the buyer to dispatching the order. Encomage acted as the project's long-term technology partner from 2018 to 2023, continuously developing new functionality, keeping the platform stable, and evolving it alongside the client's growth.
The challenge
Selling a strictly regulated category online turns ordinary e-commerce mechanics into legal and operational problems. Stock Magento 2 had no concept of the rules the retailer had to follow, and the gaps sat exactly where compliance, cost and speed live.
- Compliance was a precondition, not a feature. Every order had to satisfy legal buyer-verification requirements before it could ship — something out-of-the-box Magento can't do. Without it, the store either couldn't operate legally or had to bury the team in manual document checks, with real legal exposure if anything slipped.
- Manual operations couldn't scale. Hand-processing fulfillment and verification, on top of a large catalog that strained Magento's default search and indexing, meant slower shipping, slower browsing, and operational cost that rose with every new order and product.
- Standard Magento couldn't express the business. Canadian payment settlement, pricing rules for configurable products, and the team's day-to-day admin workflows all fell outside what off-the-shelf Magento or third-party modules could handle — leaving gaps only custom engineering could close.
The solution
Acting as the long-term technology partner, Encomage built the platform around the realities of selling regulated goods in Canada — compliant by design, automated end-to-end, and engineered where standard Magento fell short.

Developed and integrated the Moneris payment gateway, adapted to the Canadian market and to the client's specific settlement logic.

Built a fully automated shipping process from checkout to carrier handoff — the system talks to the shipping provider, creates the shipment and moves each order through every stage with no manual operator step.
Compliance & buyer verification.
Designed a buyer document-verification system aligned to Canadian legal requirements for restricted goods, so the store could process orders legally while lifting manual verification off the client's team.
Custom pricing engine.
Created a bespoke cost-calculation model for configurable products, encoding business rules and pricing logic that standard Magento can't express.
Catalog performance.
Optimized product indexing and search to keep a large catalog fast and responsive as it grew.
Admin-panel customization.
Reworked the admin around the team's real operational scenarios, so everyday tasks took fewer steps and less time.
Ongoing security.
Ran regular security audits and server monitoring throughout the engagement, holding the platform to the protection standard a sensitive product category requires.
